About
Also known as: Dickies
Few bands have kept the punk flame burning quite like The Dickies, who have been at it since forming in Los Angeles's San Fernando Valley back in 1977. Their trick has always been cramming pop hooks, tight harmonies, and proper song structures into a blur of high speed punk guitar, earning them the tag 'bubble gum punk' and the nickname 'the clown princes of punk'. They were the first California punk band to land a major label deal, signing with A&M Records, and the first to appear on network television. Their two A&M albums, The Incredible Shrinking Dickies and Dawn of the Dickies, both released in 1979, are still considered genuine punk classics. In the UK they were genuinely huge for a moment, scoring a Top 10 hit with their turbo charged cover of 'Banana Splits (Tra La La Song)' and charting with covers of 'Nights in White Satin' and 'Paranoid'. The band reckons they sold a million singles in England, which they put down to younger kids who wanted punk they could actually sing along to. They have never officially called it a day and continue to record new material.
