About
Also known as: Fabulous Thunderbirds
Few American blues acts have the staying power of The Fabulous Thunderbirds, who have been at it since 1974 with singer and harmonica player Kim Wilson as the one constant through every lineup shift. Their roots run deep in the Austin, Texas blues scene, blending Texas blues with the harmonica drenched swamp sounds of artists like Slim Harpo and Lazy Lester. They were fan favorites among fellow musicians long before the mainstream caught on, opening shows for the Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton. The big commercial moment came with the 1986 album Tuff Enuff, which went platinum in the US on the strength of the title track peaking at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. That song also landed in the films Gung Ho and Tough Guys, while "Powerful Stuff" got a boost from the 1988 film Cocktail. Guitarist Jimmie Vaughan shaped their classic sound for over a decade before departing in 1990, and the band has kept rolling through numerous lineup changes and recordings ever since, including the 2016 album Strong Like That.
