Few bands have matched The Flower Kings for sheer output in progressive rock. Formed in Sweden in 1994 around guitarist and songwriter Roine Stolt, the group grew out of his touring band and never really stopped, eventually amassing over twenty hours of music across seventeen studio albums. Their sound draws heavily from classic symphonic prog, think Yes, King Crimson, and early Genesis, built on polyrhythms, vocal harmonies, extended compositions, and lyrics that lean toward love, peace, and spiritual uplift. The 1999 album Flower Power features an eighteen section piece called "Garden of Dreams" that runs close to sixty minutes on its own. The lineup has shifted plenty over the years, and the band even went quiet for four years before regrouping in 2011. Their 2020 double album Islands was recorded entirely remotely during the COVID 19 pandemic, showing the band finding creative ways to keep going. With a career spanning box set released and new material announced, there is no sign of Stolt slowing down.
