Few bands can say Bruce Springsteen crashed their festival set twice in two days, but that's exactly what happened to The Gaslight Anthem at Glastonbury and Hard Rock Calling in 2009, with Springsteen jumping up to play 'The '59 Sound' both times. The New Brunswick, New Jersey rock band built that kind of reputation fast: their 2008 album The '59 Sound was produced by Ted Hutt, featured guests from Hot Water Music and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, topped eMusic's year end list, and landed them on the cover of Kerrang! before the magazine had ever written a single word about them. After four more albums and a hiatus that stretched from 2015 to 2022, the band came back as a full time outfit and released History Books in October 2023. The comeback record actually features Springsteen himself, which feels like the full circle moment the whole story was building toward. Their catalog runs from the scrappy punk energy of their 2007 debut Sink or Swim all the way through to that collab, with lead single '45' from 2012's Handwritten sitting among their biggest chart moments.
