About
A mod revival band from Doncaster with a story that starts with winning an EMI competition in 1981, the prize being studio time at Abbey Road. The Gents turned that down in favour of recording at home up north, pressing their debut double a side themselves in a limited run that now changes hands for up to £100 a copy. Through the mid 1980s they built a serious live following, playing working men's clubs up to five times a week and becoming fixtures on the mod and scooterist scenes, including the legendary 100 Club on Oxford Street. Their biggest chart moment came with a cover of The Easybeats' "Friday on My Mind", the only single to crack the UK top 100. After nine singles, two vinyl albums and a cassette sampler, they called it a day in 1989. Detour Records brought them back into focus from 2010 with a CD reissue programme, and in 2018 the band played a sold out farewell show in Barnsley to mark the release of the box set The Rise and Fall of the Gents alongside a brand new vinyl EP, Unfinished Business.
