About

Also known as: Albert Griffiths & the Gladiators, Albert Griffiths And The Gladiators, Gladiators

The Gladiators cut their first big hit, "Hello Carol", for Coxsone Dodd in 1969, and it went straight to the top of the Jamaican charts. Albert Griffiths founded the group and played lead guitar, with Clinton Fearon on bass and Gallimore Sutherland on rhythm guitar, all three singing. Their Studio One recordings, including "Bongo Red", "Mr. Baldwin" and "Roots Natty", became some of their best loved work, and they also worked with Lee Perry and Lloyd Daley along the way. The 1970s were the peak. A deal with Virgin Records brought Trenchtown Mix Up in 1976, then Proverbial Reggae in 1978, with a studio band that included Sly Dunbar and Lloyd Parks. They also covered "Soul Rebel", a Wailers song, and teamed up with toaster U Roy. When roots reggae faded in the 1980s, they simply kept going, releasing eleven studio albums that decade. Fearon left in 1987, while Griffiths and Sutherland carried on, and Griffiths' sons joined later.
