About
Also known as: Handsome Family, The Hansome Family
Most people first encountered The Handsome Family through "Far from Any Road", the haunting opener of True Detective's first season, but Brett and Rennie Sparks had been quietly building one of alt country's most distinctive catalogs for two decades before HBO came calling. The Chicago born, Albuquerque based duo work with a clean division of labor: Brett writes the music and sings in a warm baritone, Rennie writes the lyrics. Those lyrics pull from Gothic fiction, American folk, and a genuinely macabre imagination, weaving murder ballads and ghost stories around real historical figures like Nikola Tesla and Robert Wadlow. Mojo once called them "Americana's ghostly Sonny and Cher", and that feels about right. Their 1998 album Through the Trees is often cited as the one that cracked them open to a wider audience, recorded using Jeff Tweedy's mobile studio and named best new country album of the year by Uncut. Since then they have kept a steady pace, with their eleventh studio album Hollow arriving in 2023, its songs written during the pandemic. Andrew Bird has covered their work so often he released a full album of their songs.
