About
The Highwomen started with a simple annoyance: Amanda Shires spent hours in her van listening to country radio, kept a running tally of the women she heard, and found the list was embarrassingly short. Producer Dave Cobb pointed her toward Brandi Carlile, and the pair built a supergroup as an answer to the 1980s outlaw outfit The Highwaymen, adding Maren Morris and songwriter Natalie Hemby to complete the lineup. Their self titled debut came out on Elektra in September 2019, cut live at RCA Studio A in Nashville with Cobb producing. The songs flip the Highwaymen template, putting a refugee, a preacher, a Freedom Rider and a healer at the centre, with writing help from Jimmy Webb, Lori McKenna and Miranda Lambert. The title track answers Webb's own "Highwayman", and Yola Carter and Sheryl Crow pop up on it. They also covered Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain" and have only played together occasionally since, including a Kennedy Center Honors tribute to Amy Grant.
