About

Also known as: Innocence Mission

Karen Peris has one of the most distinctive voices in American indie folk, soft and almost otherworldly, and it sits at the heart of everything The Innocence Mission does. The Lancaster, Pennsylvania group has been quietly building one of the more singular catalogs in the dream pop and folk pop world since their self titled debut landed on A&M Records in 1989. Their 1995 album Glow broke through with "Bright as Yellow", which hit number 33 on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks and later, in 2008, was chosen as a NASA wake up call for the crew of Space Shuttle mission STS 124. That's a pretty good measure of how the song lodged itself in people's heads. After parting ways with A&M, the band leaned further into spare, intimate arrangements, releasing a string of quietly gorgeous records on their own LAMP label and through Badman Records. Their 2004 lullabies and standards collection Now the Day Is Over includes a lovely cover of Henry Mancini's "Moon River". Songs have appeared in films like Empire Records, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and Fireflies in the Garden. Their thirteenth studio album, Midwinter Swimmers, came out in late 2024 on Therese Records and Bella Union.
