Few bands have done more to bring Irish folk music to North American ears than The Irish Rovers, who have been at it since forming in Toronto back in 1963. Their biggest calling card remains "The Unicorn", but their catalogue stretches across Celtic folk, folk rock and even a stint in country rock territory when "Wasn't That a Party" crossed over in the 1980s under their brief alias The Rovers. Wilcil McDowell's accordion gave the group its most recognisable sonic signature for over 55 years before his retirement in 2020. Representing Canada at five World Expos gives you a sense of how seriously the group has been taken as cultural ambassadors. In 2018 Dublin's EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum honoured them as one of Ireland's greatest exports, and in 2023 they hit their 60th anniversary with "Hey Boys Sing Us A Song" earning a Canadian Folk Music Awards nomination for Single of the Year. Still going strong after six decades.
