About
Also known as: JBT, John Bulter Trio, The John Butler Trio
Few Australian acts have built a following the way the John Butler Trio did, turning Fremantle busking sets into a string of chart topping albums. Rooted in folk, blues and roots rock with a serious jam band streak, they put out four consecutive number one records on the Australian charts: Sunrise Over Sea, Grand National, April Uprising and the final studio album Home in 2018. Their live reputation was just as strong as their studio output, with the double live album Living 2001 2002 going platinum and cementing their status as one of Australia's best festival draws. Front man John Butler's open tuned acoustic guitar work is a big part of what sets the band apart, and his extended instrumental piece Ocean became something of a signature moment for the group. All releases since 2002 came out on Jarrah Records, the independent label Butler co founded with fellow Western Australian folk act the Waifs. After calling the project to a close in 2019, Butler has since revived the Trio with a new lineup.
