About
Also known as: Libertines
Few bands defined early 2000s British rock quite like The Libertines. Built around the volatile songwriting partnership of Pete Doherty and Carl Barât, the London four piece rode the garage rock revival wave and spearheaded it in the UK, producing a sound that owed as much to punk energy as it did to classic indie songwriting. Their first two albums, both produced by Mick Jones of The Clash, earned them a number one album and a number two single on the UK charts, while NME named their self titled second record the second best album of 2004. The band's story was never straightforward. Internal tensions and Doherty's well documented struggles with addiction pulled them apart, but The Libertines have proven stubbornly hard to keep down. After reunions in 2010 and 2014, they signed to Virgin EMI and released Anthems for Doomed Youth in 2015. Then in April 2024 they put out All Quiet on the Eastern Esplanade, their fourth studio album, showing the band still very much in the game.
