About

Also known as: Lurkers

Few UK punk bands can claim to have launched an entire record label, but The Lurkers did exactly that: their debut single "Shadow" was the first release on Beggars Banquet Records, and it landed at number twelve in John Peel's Festive Fifty in 1977. The Uxbridge band quickly built a reputation as a live force, playing the Roxy Club in its early days and racking up sessions for Peel at Maida Vale. Their debut album Fulham Fallout hit the UK Albums Chart, and "Just Thirteen" later made Mojo magazine's all time list of the best punk singles, no small feat. The band went through splits, reformations and parallel lineups over the decades, but the core of Pete Stride, Manic Esso and Nigel Moore kept the flame alive into the 2010s, releasing Chemical Landslide in 2012 and The Future's Calling in 2016. A collaboration with vocalist Danie Centric produced the single "Electrical Guitar", which topped the UK Vinyl Singles chart in 2019, followed by the album Sex Crazy in 2020. "Shadow", "Ain't Got a Clue" and "Just Thirteen" remain the benchmarks people reach for when making the case for classic late 1970s British punk.
