About
The Maccaferris take their name from Mario Maccaferri, the Italian guitarist and luthier whose distinctive guitar design drew inspiration from the Neapolitan mandolin, the very instrument that made Django Reinhardt a legend. That choice of name says a lot about where the band sits sonically: their repertoire blends traditional Italian melodies with jazzy arrangements, warm and richly coloured in equal measure. The trio of Hugo Sips, Jaïr Stunt and Matheus Nicolaiewsky are all guitarists, which gives the ensemble an unusually intimate, intertwined sound. Their programme La Musica d'Italia sweeps across the full breadth of the Italian musical tradition, from northern folk songs to Sicilian and Neapolitan dialect music, from the film scores of Ennio Morricone and Nino Rota to the Italian American world of Frank Sinatra. They also weave storytelling into their concerts, unpacking the history and emotion behind songs like Bella Ciao.
