About

Also known as: Magnetic Fields, Magnetic Fields, The, The Magnetic Field

Stephin Merritt is the obsessive creative force behind The Magnetic Fields, writing, producing, and playing a bewildering range of instruments across the band's catalog. Their crowning achievement is the 1999 triple album 69 Love Songs, a sprawling concept record that draws on everything from ukulele and Marxophone to banjo and cello, with influences ranging from Fleetwood Mac to Billie Holiday. It remains one of indie pop's most ambitious statements. After 69 Love Songs, Merritt steered the band through a deliberate "no synth" trilogy spanning i, Distortion, and Realism, then gleefully reversed course with Love at the Bottom of the Sea in 2012, loading it with synthesizers that, as Merritt put it, didn't even exist the last time they used them. The band kept the ambitious streak alive with 50 Song Memoir in 2017, one song per year of Merritt's life, and Quickies in 2020, a 28 track collection where every song clocks in under three minutes.
