About
Also known as: Mars Volta
Omar Rodríguez López and Cedric Bixler Zavala built The Mars Volta into one of progressive rock's most restless and uncompromising acts. After their previous band At the Drive In imploded, the two went further out, stacking dense, freewheeling arrangements over Bixler Zavala's surrealist lyrics. Their 2003 debut De Loused in the Comatorium, produced by Rick Rubin, was a unified piece of speculative fiction built around the story of a friend who died after a drug induced coma. Frances the Mute followed in 2005, debuting at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and going Gold in the US. The Bedlam in Goliath, a concept album inspired by a haunted ouija type board, earned them a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance in 2009. After six albums and a hiatus that turned into a formal breakup in 2013, Rodríguez López and Bixler Zavala quietly reunited and recorded a new self titled album, announcing their return in 2022 with an art installation. A refreshed live lineup, including jazz pianist Leo Genovese and drummer Linda Philomène Tsoungui, brought them back to the stage. Their ninth album, Lucro Sucio; Los Ojos del Vacio, arrived in April 2025.
