About
The Mary Wallopers treat Irish folk songs not as museum pieces but as living ammunition, full of punch and political bite. The band from Dundalk started out during the COVID 19 lockdowns when brothers Charles and Andrew Handy began streaming sessions from their living room. What kicked off as a trio eventually grew into a six piece, adding banjo, accordion, tin whistle, uilleann pipes and drums to the mix. The result sits firmly in the Irish folk tradition while carrying the blunt force of punk. Lyrically, the songs circle around workers' lives, housing struggles and resistance to exploitation, with enough dry humour to keep things from getting preachy. Their third album, Paddywhackery, recorded in two weeks with James Skelly of The Coral, features tracks like Landlord's Demise, Crowns of England and The Big Mixer, and finds the band sounding fuller and heavier than before without losing the loose, communal spirit that defines them.
