Few bands have committed so fully to sounding deliberately terrible and made it an art form. The Mummies built their entire identity around what they called 'budget rock', recording on cheap, damaged cassette gear and refusing to release anything on CD, famously stamping their vinyl with the slogan 'Fuck CDs'. The San Bruno, California four piece dressed in tattered bandages like classic monster mummies, and their chaotic, confrontational live shows became the stuff of legend in San Francisco's early garage punk scene. Their only proper studio album, Never Been Caught, came out in 1992 just after the band had already split up, which feels about right for a group this contrarian. Influenced by 1960s garage rock acts like the Sonics and the Fabulous Wailers, they left a huge mark on the garage rock revival that followed them. Music critic Mark Deming called them the 'kings of budget rock', and it is hard to argue. They have reunited periodically over the years, and in 2020 announced they were working on a film directed by Jim Garanto.
