About
Few tribute acts go as deep as The Musical Box. Formed in Montreal in 1993, this Canadian five piece doesn't just play Genesis songs, they reconstruct the full theatrical experience of Genesis on stage in the 1970s, complete with original projection slides, period costumes, and singer Denis Gagné shaving an actual bald spot into his hairline to mirror Peter Gabriel's look. The band named themselves after the Genesis track from Nursery Cryme, and that level of obsessive detail runs through everything they do. What really sets them apart is the blessing of the original band. Genesis gave them access to the 24 track master tapes at their own studio so the group could rebuild the arrangements note by note. Steve Hackett jumped on stage with them at the Royal Albert Hall, Phil Collins sat in the crowd at their Geneva show before joining them for an encore, and Gabriel brought his own kids to watch, saying he wanted them to see what their father used to do. That kind of endorsement is pretty much unheard of in the tribute world.
