About
Also known as: 隘路樂團
Few bands make music quite like The Necks. This Sydney trio, built around pianist Chris Abrahams, drummer Tony Buck, and bassist Lloyd Swanton, has been doing something genuinely unusual since 1987: taking a simple melodic or rhythmic figure and stretching it across an hour, letting microscopic changes accumulate until the whole thing transforms into something hypnotic and disorienting. Critics have reached for Krautrock (Can, Faust) and minimalist composers (La Monte Young, Steve Reich, Philip Glass) to explain the sound, but the Necks resist any clean label. Every live show starts from a blank page, completely improvised, no setlist, no agreements about who leads. Their studio albums are similarly rooted in improvisation but get sculpted through editing and overdubs. The double LP Unfold landed on Rolling Stone's list of the top 20 avant albums of 2017, and their 1998 soundtrack for the Australian film The Boys picked up multiple nominations. Rolling Stone Australia ranked them 49th among the 50 greatest Australian artists of all time.
