About
Also known as: New Amsterdams
Matt Pryor built The New Amsterdams as a quieter, more textured counterpart to his main band The Get Up Kids, swapping the emo punch for acoustic guitars, accordion, strings, and folk tinged Americana. What started as a solo outlet grew into a full band over successive records, with Get Up Kids collaborators like Ryan and Rob Pope and producer Ed Rose folding in along the way. The name itself comes from an Elvis Costello song from 1980, which tells you something about the sensibility at work. Their five Vagrant Records albums traced a steady arc from sparse bedroom recordings to fuller, more arranged sounds, and by 2006 they were sharing festival stages with Depeche Mode and Daft Punk at Coachella. After parting with Vagrant, Pryor released At the Foot of My Rival on a label partly named after his son. A 2013 compilation called Outroduction, released on Pryor's own Nightshoes Syndicate imprint, gathered up the odds and ends from across their run.
