Few acts shaped the early 1990s UK electronic scene quite like The Orb. Founded in London in 1988 by Alex Paterson and Jimmy Cauty, the group carved out its own corner of the dancefloor by playing ambient, dub inflected sets in the chill out room at Heaven nightclub, catering to weary clubbers and DJs looking for a comedown from the main room's relentless beats. Their 1991 debut The Orb's Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld helped launch the ambient house movement, and the follow up U.F.Orb hit number one in the UK in 1992. The group's sound drew heavily from Brian Eno, Cluster and Kraftwerk, but their own take was always weirder, looser and more playful. Paterson has been the only constant member through years of lineup shuffles, working variously with Thomas Fehlmann, Kris Weston and Martin 'Youth' Glover among others. Live shows were famously immersive affairs, full of psychedelic visuals and light shows that drew Pink Floyd comparisons, and the Orb even collaborated with Pink Floyd's David Gilmour on the 2010 album Metallic Spheres. They have kept releasing music steadily ever since, with their 18th studio album Buddhist Hipsters arriving in October 2025 on Cooking Vinyl.
