About
Also known as: Orbootal
Few electronic acts can claim they changed the vibe of an entire festival, but Orbital's headline set at Glastonbury in 1994 did exactly that. The brothers Phil and Paul Hartnoll, from Kent, built their reputation on live improvisation, sequencing and mixing tracks on the fly from behind banks of equipment, headlamp torches strapped to their heads. Their name comes from the M25, the motorway that served as a kind of highway for the early UK rave scene. Their 1989 track "Chime" launched them into the UK top 20 and onto Top of the Pops. From there, they built a catalogue that spans everything from the emotional weight of "Halcyon" to the politically pointed silence of the "Criminal Justice Bill?" remix. Albums like In Sides and Snivilisation, the latter featuring Alison Goldfrapp, remain touchstones of intelligent electronic music. After a couple of splits and reunions, they have kept pushing forward, most recently with the album Optical Delusion in 2023, which included a collaboration with Sleaford Mods.
