About
Also known as: Postal Service, T.P.S.
The Postal Service made exactly one studio album, Give Up, and it turned out to be more than enough. Released in 2003 on Sub Pop, it became the label's biggest seller since Nirvana's Bleach, eventually going platinum in the US. The project grew out of a genuinely unusual creative process: producer Jimmy Tamborello would mail DATs to Ben Gibbard, who added vocals and sent them back. Jenny Lewis rounded out the lineup with vocals and live instrumentation. Their influences lean toward classic synth acts like Depeche Mode, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, and the Human League, and you can hear it in the glitchy, warm indietronica they landed on. The lead single "Such Great Heights" became one of those songs that ended up everywhere, from Grey's Anatomy to UPS commercials, and even sparked a minor controversy when Apple aired what Gibbard called a shot for shot recreation of the music video without telling anyone. The band largely went quiet after Give Up but reunited for its 10th and 20th anniversaries, both times drawing huge crowds. Their final show was announced for September 2024.
