Few bands have weathered as much upheaval as The Pretenders and still come out sounding essential. Built around Chrissie Hynde's songwriting and unmistakable voice, the band hit the ground running with their 1980 self titled debut, which Rolling Stone and VH1 both ranked among the greatest albums ever made. "Brass in Pocket" went to number one in the UK and broke them in the US too, setting a template of tough, melodic rock that held up across decades of lineup changes. After the devastating losses of guitarist James Honeyman Scott and bassist Pete Farndon in 1982 and 1983, Hynde kept the band alive, scoring what became their biggest US hit with "Back on the Chain Gang". From "Don't Get Me Wrong" in 1986 to the ballad "I'll Stand by You" in 1994, the Pretenders kept finding new audiences. Their place in the canon was sealed when they entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.
