About
Buffalo's The Quakes have been flying the psychobilly flag since 1986, back when the genre had almost zero foothold in the US. Rather than battle for scraps in a scene dominated by hardcore punk, they packed up and moved to London, eventually landing a slot at a Belgian psychobilly fest in front of 4,000 people for their very first European show. That kind of hustle defined the band early on. Fronted by guitarist and vocalist Paul Roman, the group signed to Nervous Records and put out a self titled debut in 1988, recorded in East London. Their catalog spans from raw psychobilly to a brief pop rockabilly detour with New Generation, a move that did not go down well with European fans. The 1996 album Quiff Rock pulled things back to a stripped down, psychobilly sound. They have kept releasing music and playing select festivals, remaining one of the rare American acts to earn genuine credibility in what has always been a heavily European scene.
