Three tracks on Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette soundtrack introduced a lot of people to The Radio Dept., but the Lund, Sweden band had already made a serious impression with their 2003 debut Lesser Matters, which scored a 9 out of 10 in NME and landed ninth on that magazine's list of the 50 best albums of 2004. Their sound sits somewhere between dream pop, shoegaze and indie pop, drawing comparisons to My Bloody Valentine and Cocteau Twins, with washes of distortion giving way to synthesizer on their second album Pet Grief. The band's path hasn't been straightforward. A lengthy legal dispute with Labrador Records over master ownership and royalties kept them relatively quiet for years, but they eventually settled and regained control of their back catalogue. Since then they've operated through their own imprint Just So Records, and in 2023 signed a publishing deal with Kobalt Music. Their fourth album Running Out of Love came out in 2016, and a 2018 single called Going Down Swinging showed they hadn't lost their touch.
