Few bands distilled the raw, buzzing energy of 1960s California quite like The Seeds. Built around the unpredictable vocal style of Sky Saxon and the keyboard bass work of Daryl Hooper, the LA outfit scored a national Top 40 hit with "Pushin' Too Hard" in 1966 and quickly became fixtures of the garage rock scene. Their first two albums are still held up as genuine classics of the genre, and names like Iggy Pop, Smashing Pumpkins, and Animal Collective have all pointed to the band as a key influence. Their 1967 album Future showed a more ambitious, psychedelic side, complete with orchestration and ornate artwork, and it marked the commercial peak of their career. The band fragmented after 1968 but went through several reformations, including a Saxon led version that toured until his death in 2009. Founding keyboardist Hooper then put together a new lineup in 2017, released a single in 2021, and the band carries on today.
