About
The Servants were the band that never quite fit in, even when they landed right in the middle of a movement. David Westlake formed them in Hayes in 1985, and their reluctant appearance on the NME's C86 compilation, with the track Transparent, tied them to the indie scene whether they liked it or not. They kept a standoffish distance from it all, turning down several labels for their first single, She's Always Hiding, and following it with a reverb heavy Peel session. Luke Haines joined through an NME ad in 1986, and Hugh Whitaker quit The Housemartins to drum for them. The band put out two albums. Disinterest came in 1990 and was largely ignored until Mojo dug it up some twenty years later, praising Westlake's mordant lyrics. The second, Small Time, was recorded as a duo in 1991, with both men sensing it would never come out. They were right, until Cherry Red released it in 2012.
