About
The Steel Wheels have been quietly building one of the more impressive catalogs in American roots music since 2005, starting out as a traditional string band and gradually pulling in bluegrass, gospel, blues, country, and rock along the way. Based in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, the five piece centers on Trent Wagler's songwriting and mountain banjo playing, with fiddle, mandolin, drums, and bass filling out a sound that sits comfortably in the Americana space without getting too comfortable there. They've put out a remarkable string of studio albums, most recently their self titled 2025 record. Beyond their own music, The Steel Wheels run the Red Wing Roots Music Festival each summer at Natural Chimneys Park in Mt. Solon, Virginia, a family friendly gathering that has featured everyone from Old Crow Medicine Show and Lucinda Williams to Lake Street Dive and The Punch Brothers. It's become a genuine community institution, and it says a lot about the band that they've made festival curation as central to their identity as their recordings.
