About
Also known as: Stooges
Few bands rewired rock as drastically as The Stooges. Formed in Ann Arbor in 1967 around singer Iggy Pop and brothers Ron and Scott Asheton, they built a sound that was raw, confrontational, and completely unlike anything else around, dragging blues and garage rock into something heavier and stranger. Iggy's stage antics, including acts of self mutilation and diving into crowds, became the stuff of legend. Their first two records, The Stooges and Fun House, flopped commercially but are now considered cornerstones of proto punk. Raw Power followed in 1973 and only deepened their influence on what punk would become. After breaking up in 1974, the band reunited in 2003 and eventually released their final album, Ready to Die, in 2013. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted them in 2010, and Rolling Stone placed them among the 100 greatest artists of all time. They officially called it quits in 2016 following the deaths of Ron Asheton, Scott Asheton, and saxophonist Steve Mackay.
