About

Also known as: Tallis Scholars

Few groups have done more to bring Renaissance polyphony to a wide audience than the Tallis Scholars. Founded in 1973 by conductor Peter Phillips, this British vocal ensemble built its reputation on clean, precise a cappella singing, specialising in sacred music from roughly 1450 to 1600. Their recording of Allegri's Miserere, made at Merton College Oxford in 1980, was later named one of the 50 Greatest Recordings of All Time by BBC Music Magazine, and their disc of Josquin's Missa Pange lingua took Gramophone's Record of the Year. All releases come out on Gimell Records, their own label, named after a Tudor manuscript term for a twinned vocal part. Over 60 discs in, they've covered Tallis, Palestrina, Byrd and Victoria, plus forays into Russian Orthodox repertoire and contemporary composers like Arvo Pärt and Eric Whitacre. In 2013 they were inducted into the Gramophone Hall of Fame, and Gramophone dedicated an entire special issue to them for their 50th anniversary in 2023.
