About
The Twilight Sad describe their sound as "folk with layers of noise", and that's a pretty fair summary. Singer James Graham's thick Scottish accent sits on top of Andy MacFarlane's dense walls of shoegaze guitar, with the odd wheeze of accordion thrown in. They're also known for being properly loud live, the kind of ear splitting that critics keep bringing up. Their 2007 debut, Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters, was recorded in just three days using the first songs they'd ever written, and it still won them album of the year nods from Planet Sound and The Skinny. They've never stood still since. Forget the Night Ahead got darker and more personal, while No One Can Ever Know leaned on industrial and krautrock influences for something sparser. Nobody Wants to Be Here and Nobody Wants to Leave followed in 2014, and It Won/t Be Like This All the Time landed in 2019. These days the Kilsyth band is a duo of Graham and MacFarlane, and their sixth album, It's the Long Goodbye, arrived in March 2026 to glowing reviews.
