Few Australian bands hit the ground running quite like The Vines did. The Sydney outfit burst onto the international scene in 2002 with their debut album Highly Evolved, which shifted 1.5 million copies worldwide and landed them on the cover of Rolling Stone under the headline "Rock is Back". Their sound blends 1960s garage rock rawness with 1990s alternative rock energy, and that combination was enough to earn them an ARIA Award for Breakthrough Artist for the single "Get Free" along with five other nominations that same year. Vocalist and guitarist Craig Nicholls has been the one constant through every lineup shuffle in the band's history. Highly Evolved reached number 11 on the US Billboard albums chart and went platinum in Australia by 2003. The Vines went on to release a total of seven studio albums, cementing their place as one of the more enduring acts to come out of the garage rock revival wave of the early 2000s.
