About
Also known as: Walkmen
Few bands captured the anxious, wired energy of early 2000s New York quite like The Walkmen. Formed from the ashes of Jonathan Fire*Eater and The Recoys, the five piece built their sound around Leithauser's raw, strained vocals, jangly guitars, plinking pianos and vintage instrumentation recorded at their own Harlem studio, Marcata. Their 2004 album Bows + Arrows put them on the map properly, with the urgent, coiled post punk of "The Rat" becoming the defining single of that whole New York revival era. Over seven studio albums they kept restless, shifting from the atmospheric debut Everyone Who Pretended to Like Me Is Gone through the folk leaning A Hundred Miles Off to the warmer, more open sound of Heaven in 2012. They even squeezed in a full track by track cover of Harry Nilsson and John Lennon's Pussy Cats as a farewell to their Harlem studio space. After going on hiatus in 2013, with members heading off to solo projects and Fleet Foxes, the band reunited in 2023 for what they called The Revenge Tour.
