About
Also known as: The Whisppers, Whispers
Few vocal groups have stayed relevant across four decades the way The Whispers have. Formed in 1963 in Watts, California, the group built their reputation as a ferocious live act before the records even caught up. Their sound moved fluidly through soul, disco, boogie, and quiet storm R&B, landing them 15 top ten R&B singles along the way. The twin pillars of their chart story are 'And the Beat Goes On' from 1979 and 'Rock Steady' from 1987, both of which hit number one on the R&B chart, with 'Rock Steady' also reaching number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100. Their SOLAR Records run in the late 1970s and 1980s produced some of their sharpest work, including the albums The Whispers and Just Gets Better with Time, both certified platinum or gold by the RIAA. Philadelphia soul writers like Norman Harris and Bunny Sigler contributed to their catalog, giving tracks like 'A Mother for My Children' a deep, crafted feel. After founding member Marcus Hutson passed away in 2000, the group vowed never to replace him and carried on as a quartet. They were inducted into the National Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame in 2014.
