About
Also known as: 3 Dog Night
Three Dog Night racked up 21 Billboard Hot 100 top 40 hits between 1969 and 1975, three of them reaching number one, making them one of the biggest concert draws of their era. What set them apart was their knack for spotting great outside songwriters before anyone else caught on. They brought Harry Nilsson's "One", Randy Newman's "Mama Told Me Not to Come", and Hoyt Axton's "Joy to the World" to mainstream audiences who might never have found those writers otherwise. The band was built around three lead vocalists, Chuck Negron, Cory Wells, and Danny Hutton, which gave them an unusually deep bench of voices and a sound that moved easily between hard rock and polished pop. They got their start at the Whisky a Go Go in Los Angeles in 1968 and even had early studio sessions with Brian Wilson before settling into their own identity. The name itself comes from an Aboriginal Australian expression for a bitterly cold night, though exactly who came up with it remains a friendly dispute.
