About
Thulcandra is the melodic black and death metal project of Steffen Kummerer, who also fronts Obscura, and the band takes its name from a Darkthrone demo, which in turn lifts it from a C. S. Lewis novel where it means Earth, the silent planet. Formed in 2003 and revived after a three year hiatus, they signed with Napalm Records and put out Fallen Angel's Dominion in 2010, followed by Under a Frozen Sun, Ascension Lost, A Dying Wish and, most recently, Hail the Abyss in 2023. The sound is a loving nod to mid 90s Nordic and Swedish black death, with Dissection, Sacramentum and Unanimated as touchstones. Those albums wear Kristian Necrolord Wahlin's cold blue cover art, and Ascension Lost brought in extra groove, a trick picked up from Tom G. Warrior. Metal Hammer called that record a flawless homage to the Swedish legends of the early nineties.
