About
Tim Barry made his name as the frontman of Richmond, Virginia punk rock band Avail, but since 2004 he has been carving out a second life as a solo folk musician. The contrast fits: raw, road worn storytelling over acoustic guitar, rooted in the same working class grit that defined his punk years. He also played bass in the folk punk outfit (Young) Pioneers back in the mid nineties, so the folk instinct was always there. All of his solo records have come out on Chunksaah Records, running from Rivanna Junction in 2006 through to Spring Hill in 2022, with a split EP alongside Frank Turner along the way. That Turner connection makes sense: both artists share a knack for folk flavored punk songwriting that feels lived in rather than performed. Over the years Barry has released live records and demos alongside the studio albums, suggesting someone more interested in the work itself than in polishing it.
