About
Tocotronic have been one of the defining voices of the Hamburger Schule movement since the mid 1990s, sitting alongside Blumfeld and Die Sterne as the scene's most enduring acts. Their 1995 debut Digital ist besser set the tone with grungy, lo fi punk rock and sharp, ironic lyrics that Bayerischer Rundfunk later called a milestone in German pop history. From there the band never stood still: K.O.O.K. in 1999 drew comparisons to Pavement, the self titled White Album in 2002 went dreamy and heavily produced, and Schall und Wahn in 2010 topped the German charts as the closing chapter of their Berlin Trilogy. Frontman Dirk von Lowtzow once introduced the album Kapitulation by calling it "the most beautiful word in the German language", which tells you everything about how Tocotronic operate. With a thirteenth album Nie wieder Krieg in 2022 and Golden Years in 2025, the band keeps evolving without losing its cult following.
