Tom Odell has a knack for piano driven songs that cut straight to the bone, and it was clear from the start that he was something different. His debut EP Songs from Another Love landed in 2012, and within months he had won the BRITs Critics' Choice Award, becoming the first male artist to take that prize. His debut album Long Way Down hit number one in the UK, and in 2014 he picked up the Ivor Novello for Songwriter of the Year. That same year his cover of the Beatles track Real Love topped Shazam's trending list after soundtracking the John Lewis Christmas advert. His songs have a habit of turning up everywhere: TV series like The Blacklist and The Vampire Diaries, films like The Fault in Our Stars and If I Stay, and Burberry runway shows. After years on Columbia Records he went independent in 2022, releasing Best Day of My Life and then Black Friday in 2024, the title track of which became one of his biggest singles yet. His influences range from Elton John and David Bowie to Bob Dylan and Tom Waits, and that breadth shows in music that shifts between tender indie folk and something considerably grander.
