About

Tomatito built his reputation the hard way, spending two decades as the guitarist behind flamenco legend Camarón de la Isla, often alongside Paco de Lucía. That partnership produced some of flamenco's most celebrated recordings, including the 1979 hit "La Leyenda del Tiempo" and the album Paris 87, which took a Latin Grammy for best flamenco album in 2000. When Camarón died in 1992, Tomatito stepped fully into his own career, and it turned out he had plenty to say on his own terms. His solo work weaves traditional flamenco together with jazz, a combination he sees as natural since both styles grew out of struggle and liberation. On Barrio Negro he pushed further, pulling in Afro Cuban and Brazilian sounds. His long running collaboration with Cuban pianist Michel Camilo produced Spain, Spain Again, and Spain Forever. He has also won two solo Latin Grammys, for Aguadulce and Sonanta Suite, and his score for the film Vengo earned a César Award for best film music.
