Estrella Morente has one of flamenco's most recognizable voices, and she made sure the whole world knew it when she lent her singing to Penélope Cruz's character in Pedro Almodóvar's film Volver in 2006. Born in Las Gabias and raised in a household where flamenco was simply the air everyone breathed, she released her debut album Mi cante y un poema in 2001, which went platinum and set the tone for a career that has since taken her to Carnegie Hall, the Barbican in London, and the Carré in Amsterdam. Her range as a collaborator is striking. She has worked with composer Michael Nyman, guitarist Pat Metheny, and the legendary Paco de Lucía all on the same record, Autorretrato from 2012. Her father Enrique Morente, one of contemporary flamenco's defining figures, produced her album Mujeres in 2006. More recently she has explored nuevo flamenco territory alongside the Amsterdams Andalusisch Orkest, keeping her sound rooted in tradition while staying genuinely curious about where it can go.
