About

Also known as: Anthony Fitzgerald

Tony Christie built his name on big, dramatic vocals and some genuinely memorable singles. His early 1970s run on MCA Records gave him three hits in a single year: "Las Vegas", "I Did What I Did for Maria" and "(Is This the Way to) Amarillo", the last of which had shifted over a million copies by September 1972. He also played Magaldi on the original 1976 Evita album and sang the theme for the TV series The Protectors. When British chart success dried up through the 1980s and 90s, he stayed busy recording for the German market, where a collaboration with producer Jack White went platinum. The real second act came in 2005, when "Amarillo" was reissued for Comic Relief featuring Peter Kay in the video, though the audio was the untouched 1971 recording. It sat at number one for seven weeks, outselling every other number one that year, and his greatest hits collection hit the top spot in the albums chart the very next week. He was handed the freedom of Amarillo, Texas as a result, which is not something most Sheffield singers can say.
