Tony MacAlpine is one of those guitarists who refuses to be boxed in. The Springfield, Massachusetts native built his reputation on neoclassical metal, weaving Chopin inspired passages into ferocious shred playing, and that combination made his debut Edge of Insanity (1986) a landmark of the genre. His technique leans heavily on sweep tapping, a variation of sweep picking, and he plays across guitar and keyboards with equal command. Over a career spanning four decades, MacAlpine has released twelve studio albums and collaborated with a remarkable range of acts. He was a key figure in the shred era, contributed keyboards to debut albums by Vinnie Moore and Joey Tafolla, and played guitar in the supergroup M.A.R.S. Later he joined Planet X alongside Derek Sherinian and Virgil Donati, and toured with Steve Vai's band The Breed. His twelfth solo album, Concrete Gardens, came out in 2015.
