About
The New York Times once called Tony Malaby one of the best players of his generation, and listening to his output makes it easy to see why. The Tucson born tenor saxophonist relocated to New York in 1995 and quickly found himself in serious company, lending his sound to Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra, Paul Motian's Electric Bebop Band, and Fred Hersch's projects, among many others. His playing sits squarely in avant garde jazz and post bop territory, restless and searching without ever losing a sense of purpose. As a leader, Malaby has built an impressive catalog across labels like Clean Feed, Sunnyside, and Songlines, with records like Tamarindo, Paloma Recio, and Somos Agua showing real range. Paloma Recio is a particular standout, weaving in the Musica Calada of Frederic Mompou alongside original compositions. His 2022 release The Cave of Winds on Pyroclastic showed he was still pushing forward, and collaborators over the years have included Michael Formanek, Tom Rainey, Ben Monder, and Eivind Opsvik.
