About

Toonkunstkoor Amsterdam has been singing since 1829, which makes it one of the longer running choirs in the Netherlands. About 80 trained amateur singers make up the ranks, and their repertoire runs from the big choral staples like Beethoven's Ninth and the Requiems of Mozart and Verdi to Stravinsky, Ravel, Tippett and Egon Kracht. Professional orchestras invite them along fairly often, for instance for Rufus Wainwright's Dream Requiem with the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra. Bach's St Matthew Passion is the work they are most tied to. The choir first sang it in 1874 under Johannes Verhulst, and in 1899 Willem Mengelberg conducted it with the Concertgebouw Orchestra and the choir, starting a yearly tradition that has carried on ever since, since 2016 with the Concertgebouw Chamber Orchestra. They also stage at least one production of their own each season, take on commissioned new pieces, and have been led by conductor Boudewijn Jansen since 2003.
