Trapped Under Ice helped reshape what hardcore punk sounded like in the early 2010s, and their 2011 record Big Kiss Goodnight is widely credited with bringing beatdown hardcore back into focus at a time when melodic styles were dominating the scene. The Baltimore band draws on a raw New York hardcore lineage, citing acts like Madball, Hatebreed, Biohazard and Crown of Thornz as touchstones, and vocalist Justice Tripp counts Fury of Five and Iggy Pop among his personal benchmarks. Formed in 2007, the band built a serious international following through relentless touring before calling it quits in 2013, then reuniting in 2015. Their third album Heatwave arrived in 2017 on Pop Wig Records, a label co owned by Tripp and former drummer Brendan Yates, who went on to front Turnstile. Even when Trapped Under Ice goes quiet for stretches, their shadow over the hardcore world stays long.
