About
Also known as: Trouble (Metal)
Few bands can claim to have genuinely shaped an entire genre, but Trouble are one of them. Formed in Chicago in 1978, they are regularly grouped alongside Candlemass, Pentagram and Saint Vitus as one of doom metal's founding forces. Their recipe was deceptively simple: thick, down tuned Black Sabbath riffs soaked in late 1960s psychedelia, topped with lyrics that drew openly from the Bible rather than the Satanic imagery that dominated the metal scene at the time. Metal Blade ran with that contrast and marketed them as 'white metal', a label the band never much liked. The first two albums, Psalm 9 and The Skull, are still considered essential doom metal listening. Later records like Manic Frustration pushed deeper into Beatlesque psychedelia and showed a more adventurous side. Dave Grohl was such a fan that he quoted Psalm 9 alongside Sgt. Pepper's in the liner notes for his 2004 tribute album Probot, on which original vocalist Eric Wagner appeared. Wagner passed away in 2021, but the band has continued with Kyle Thomas on vocals.
