About
Also known as: Gary Numan & Tubeway Army, Gary Numan + Tubeway Army
Tubeway Army started out as a scrappy London punk band and ended up with the first synthesiser based number one in UK chart history. They formed in 1977 around Gary Numan, who stumbled onto a Minimoog in the studio while making their debut album and slowly steered the sound toward cold, electronic sci fi. Philip K. Dick and J. G. Ballard were big influences on the lyrics. The breakthrough came in 1979 with "Are 'Friends' Electric?", which climbed from number 71 to the top spot and stayed there for four weeks. Replicas, the parent album, hit number one too. Their near motionless, android like Top of the Pops appearance became legend, with the band dressed all in black. Numan soon dropped the Tubeway Army name and went solo, keeping the same musicians as his backing band. Before that, a violent last pub gig in 1978 had already convinced him to go studio only.
